UC Merced is the first research-oriented comprehensive university established in the United States in the 21st century. About
UC Merced, established in 2005, is the tenth campus in the UC System and the newest among all the campuses. It upholds the excellent research standards and educational quality of the University of California system. Additionally, UC Merced is dedicated to advanced research and environmental sustainability in its construction. It is located approximately a two-hour drive from San Francisco and is near two airports.
The campus includes five distinctive research institutes: the Health Sciences Research Institute, Sierra Nevada Research Institute, Advanced Solar Energy Research Institute (UC Solar), Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS), and the UC Water Institute, which focuses on water quality and sustainability research.
